Many Mara camps have a fascinating history as bush pioneers, hunters, adventurers, wildlife, and photographers with diverse offshore backgrounds and ethnicity. Few however were born and raised in the Mara. Jackson Naurori is a remarkable exception. Raised from childhood, he herded cattle and protecting them from lions. Jackson is a full blooded traditional Masai warrior. After independence, in 1963, Kenyans became urbanised with highways, cities, shopping malls and social media. The tribe, however, that clung to their traditional ways are the Maasai, and Jackson’s wildlife skills and knowledge embraced change but retained the bond with his native land.

Through hard work and vision, Jackson became one of the Mara’s most highly regarded tracker, driver, and guide and an extremely talented photographer: Jackson knows the Mara intimately and many photographers have known Jackson Naurori for a long time, Building on this, in 2018, Jackson created his dream: the beautifully sited Tembo Bush Camp in the heart of the Mara Reserve that catered to wildlife photographer’s needs with purpose built 4 X 4 safari wagons in the heart of the wildlife action.

The Tembo Bush Camp is a 100% Maasai owned wildlife camp. Building a second camp, the Tembo Spirit Camp, on hereditary land in the relaxed environment of a private conservancy, Jackson saw a need to create a fuller Mara experience within the Tembo by Jackson Collection that provides visitors with two diverse camps in the best of both Mara areas. This makes possible night game drives, walking safaris, a pool and spa in the beautiful Lemek Conservancy in addition to the authentic traditional wilderness safari in the National Reserve.

At this point, Jackson partnered with the Cleave family remaining a 100% Kenyan owned facility. The Cleaves have a lifetime experience in flying bush planes into wildlife areas for famous hunting firms in Botswana, and subsequently as a specialised scheduled tourist airline in Kenya with bases at the coast and Nairobi. This brings a wealth of experience of wildlife areas and camps, and general travel needs across Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Sudan, the Seychelles, Madagascar, and the Comoros Islands. The partnership creates a well-balanced knowledge base that allows camp upgrades, online bookings and individual, group and tour operator satisfaction.
