A Rare Sight in Laikipia: Giza the Black Leopard with Nyota and Zawadi

A black leopard lying between two spotted leopards on a red dirt track at the edge of thick bush, licking its lips
Location: Laikipia, Kenya. Subjects: Nyota, Giza and Zawadi. Guide: Jackson Naurori. Photo: Patrick Kientz

This photograph captures a rare moment in Laikipia, Kenya: three leopards resting together. Nyota means stars, Giza means darkness and Zawadi means gift, and together they make a scene of calm, trust and balance.

Giza stands out: a black leopard, melanistic and rare. Laikipia remains one of the few places in Africa that offer regular sightings, and moments like this show why the region matters for conservation and research.

Patrick Kientz returned to Laikipia with one clear image in mind, a dream formed years earlier that never faded. When Giza appeared, that dream became real again. Wildlife photography often begins with patience and belief, and this image proves both.

Our Director, Jackson Naurori, led the experience. His field knowledge shows here: reading tracks, knowing the leopards’ habits and respecting their space, the skills that make an encounter safe and ethical.

Nyota and Zawadi complete the story and give it depth, with a family bond that appears subtle yet strong. The three rest close together, alert yet relaxed, a sign of a habitat with low pressure and steady protection.

In Laikipia, community conservation supports such moments. Local involvement protects wildlife corridors and the balance of prey, which benefits predators like Giza and the generations to come.

Why this moment matters

  • Black leopard sightings remain rare in Africa
  • Laikipia supports long-term leopard monitoring
  • Ethical guiding protects both animals and guests
  • Wildlife dreams need time, trust and respect

The photograph tells one clear story. Nature rewards patience. Laikipia keeps its secrets. Some dreams wait, then arrive quietly.

Closer to home, in the Mara, leopards are among the wildlife seen around our Tembo Spirit Boutique Camp in the Lemek Conservancy.
