Why Tembo by Jackson Is the Perfect Choice for Wildlife Photographers
For a wildlife photographer, the difference between a good safari and a great one is access, timing and guidance. At Tembo by Jackson, we have built every part of the experience around the conditions photographers need for the images they came for.
Location that gives you the advantage
Tembo Bush Camp sits inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of the richest wildlife destinations on earth, close to the famous Double Crossing. This means you do not waste valuable hours driving in from outside the gates. At first light, you are already in the middle of the action, ready to capture lions on a hunt, elephants crossing the plains or cheetahs on the move. Being inside the Reserve also allows us to respond quickly to sightings, giving you more chances at rare encounters. The camp even has a media tent, often used by professional photographers.
Tembo Spirit Boutique Camp, our second camp, lies in the Lemek Conservancy at the northern end of the Mara ecosystem, where limited vehicle access means low-density game viewing. Night game drives and the view over the escarpment add plenty more to photograph.
Guides who understand photography
Jackson Naurori, our Director, was born in the Mara, and he and his team know every corner of it. Together they bring decades of experience in tracking, positioning and reading animal behaviour. For them, photography is about patience and timing, not rushing from sighting to sighting. They also understand light: our game drives leave at first light and again around 4 pm, and your guide will position the vehicle for those early morning and late afternoon golden hours.
Vehicles designed for photographers
Our 4x4 safari vehicles are built with photographers in mind: wide-open sides, customised seats, low-noise operation, stable camera mounts and a set-up for both low-angle and high-angle photography. These features give you the freedom to work with your gear without obstruction and to react instantly when the action unfolds, whether it is a leopard descending from a tree or birds taking flight.
Patience and respect for the subject
We believe in ethical wildlife photography. Our guides keep a respectful distance, ensuring animals are undisturbed, while still positioning you for the best possible view. They will wait with you for hours if needed, because they know that one perfect frame is worth the time. With a private vehicle, the day’s programme can be adapted to suit your shooting.
Knowledge beyond the Maasai Mara
While the Mara is our home, we also extend photography safaris across Kenya and East Africa, including Tsavo and the great lakes, giving you the chance to broaden your portfolio. We know where to find Amboseli’s elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them, the seasonal flamingo gatherings at Lake Nakuru and Samburu’s rare species, such as Grevy’s zebra and the reticulated giraffe.
