Should children go on safari? Living proof from the Mara

A young guest smiling in a safari vehicle on the plains of the Maasai Mara

Have you heard the debate over whether children should go on safari? The argument runs that they will not really enjoy game drives: too long, too early, too quiet. Here is living proof to the contrary. Check out the smiles on this young miss, who flew into camp with her dad and lapped up every minute, from the airstrip to the top of the Land Cruiser.

Camps that suit families

Tembo Spirit Boutique Camp in the Lemek Conservancy is well suited to families. The swimming pool and spa tent make the afternoons easy, and the conservancy allows walking safaris and night game drives that are not permitted inside the reserve. The family tent there is a favourite, as another small guest found recently, exploring every corner of it in the short clip below. Tembo Bush Camp, in the heart of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, has two luxury family tents of its own.

Safaris planned around the guests

We plan each safari around our guests, adjusting the pace, the routes and the daily programme to match them. With children that means a bush breakfast when it is time to eat, a shorter drive when attention wanders, and guides who make every sighting a story. Children love adventure and camp life, and the Mara gives them both.

Flying in makes the journey part of the fun: daily light-aircraft flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport and from the coast land at the Mara airstrips, 15 to 30 minutes from camp. See our air safari packages.
